Become a STAR for children
Why are Stars needed?
When an allegation of child physical or sexual abuse is reported, the MDT immediately surrounds the child and their non-offending family members with support services. These services continue for as long as the child needs. Many of the families that are provided ongoing services have significant financial challenges and are not always able to afford “extras” (items and/or activities).
The Friends of the Cortland County Child Advocacy Center has started a special fund to help these children to attend camps, art classes, self-defense classes, horseback riding, etc. Additionally, this fund also helps to assist with on-going needs; such as, school supplies, clothing, transportation, meals, holiday gifts, etc.
How does it work?
When a specific need for a child is identified, an email message will go out to all Stars. If you are able to help, just respond to the email. The request may be monetary of varying amounts or for a specific item needed (you do the shopping and drop the items off at the CAC).
Will Stars meet the child(ren) they sponsor?
Confidentiality is of the utmost importance; therefore, a Star will not ever meet, know the name, or see a photo of the child that they sponsor. Stars may be provided with a child’s age, gender, and/or grade level. All communication will funnel through the CAC/MDT. A Star can send a note of encouragement and may at times receive thank you notes; however, names will never be revealed.
